Empowering individuals through therapeutic riding
Since 1993, the Wauchope/Port Macquarie Centre of Riding for the Disabled (NSW) has provided life-changing therapeutic riding experiences for individuals with disability across the Mid North Coast. What began with a small group on a private property in Kendall has grown into a vital community-led program now operating weekly at the Wauchope Showground.
The program delivers more than riding. It offers personal achievement, connection, and confidence, creating lasting outcomes for riders of all ages and abilities.
Built by volunteers, backed by the region
Every Tuesday during school terms, volunteers, coaches, and horses come together to run sessions between 9am and 12pm. The centre works closely with local schools and welcomes new riders, carers, and visitors. Many of whom find joy in simply watching the transformation happen from the sidelines.
From small milestones to major personal breakthroughs, the sense of independence and empowerment that riding brings is something that stays with participants for life.
The role of Regional Australia Bank
Regional Australia Bank has supported the Centre through its
Community Partnership Program, helping fund essential equipment and resources that directly improve the program’s quality and reach. The partnership is helping to sustain and expand the program, ensuring more riders can experience the benefits of therapeutic horsemanship in regional NSW.
The Centre is currently seeking sponsorship to fund a new horse float, which will enable the safe transport of horses for sessions. Each horse costs more than $4,000 per year to care for, and ongoing financial support is critical to sustaining operations.
Community members and businesses are invited to contribute through donations, corporate sponsorship, or volunteering. Every hour of time, dollar raised, or resource donated helps keep this vital program running.
Three words that say it all:
Enjoyment. Learning. Achievement.
That’s what Riding for the Disabled (NSW) – Wauchope/Port Macquarie is all about.
