Friends of McMaugh Gardens Inc. was formed to support one of Uralla’s most valued facilities, McMaugh Gardens Aged Care. The facility itself was made possible through a community-driven effort in the 1980s, seeded by a donation from Matron Hilda McMaugh and carried forward by local leaders including Dr Betty Batt. The aged care facility officially opened in 1990.
Soon after, a group of volunteers established an auxiliary committee to raise funds for essential equipment and activities that would improve the quality of life for residents.
In 2000, the committee became Friends of McMaugh Gardens, and today has over 60 active members. Members have been supporting the facility for over three decades, and in 2013, the group formally became incorporated.

Investing in Wellbeing
The group’s fundraising directly improves life for residents, from funding monthly entertainment and therapy programs to purchasing critical care equipment like lifting machines, beds, and specialised chairs.
One of the most impactful purchases has been care chairs, which allow residents with limited mobility to leave their rooms and participate in shared activities or simply enjoy time outside. This not only enhances comfort but also boosts social connection and emotional wellbeing.
“Seeing a resident once confined to their bed now socialising in the courtyard is what it’s all about,” says the group.
Partnership in Action
Regional Australia Bank, through the Community Partnership Program, provides the group with its most significant annual donation. This helps ease the financial and physical pressure on its volunteer base, who continue to contribute through stalls, bake sales, and community events.
The program also helps the group respond quickly to priority needs. Each month, McMaugh Gardens presents a wish list and thanks to the CPP, the group can often say yes to essential, high-cost items like lifting machines or activity resources.
Looking ahead
As McMaugh Gardens has evolved into a high-care ageing in place facility, the demand for complex equipment and support has grown. Friends of McMaugh Gardens plans to continue its support long-term, helping staff deliver care and ensuring residents enjoy a dignified, connected experience.
The certainty of continued CPP support gives the group the confidence to commit to future purchases and seek matched funding from other sources.
How to support
New members are always welcome, and all contributions, big or small, are valued. Fundraising events are advertised locally, and volunteers are invited to join in whatever capacity they can. Whether that’s baking, attending meetings, or simply helping out on the day, the group provides a friendly, meaningful way to give back.

Why Community Matters
The success of Friends of McMaugh Gardens is tied directly to the generosity of the Uralla community. From Regional Australia Bank members who nominate the group through the CPP, to local businesses and families who support their stalls and fundraising days.
